Illinois Shakespeare Festival Brings the Bard to Central Illinois

For nearly five decades, the Illinois Shakespeare Festival has brought the timeless works of William Shakespeare to life for audiences across Central Illinois. Held each summer on the grounds of the Ewing Cultural Center in Bloomington, the festival has grown from a modest outdoor theater production in 1978 into one of the region’s premier professional repertory theater experiences.

Produced by Illinois State University through the School of Theatre, Dance, and Film, the festival combines classic Shakespearean storytelling with contemporary productions, family programming, educational outreach, and community events. Organizers say the festival now welcomes more than 10,000 patrons each season, attracting theater lovers from throughout Illinois and beyond.

Italian-inspired Lineup for 2026

The 2026 season marks the festival’s 49th year and features an Italian-inspired lineup selected by artistic director Robert Quinlan. This year’s repertory productions include Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy “Romeo and Juliet,” the comedy “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” and, for the first time in festival history, the American classic “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder.

According to festival organizers, the season reflects Shakespeare’s fascination with Italy while also expanding the festival’s artistic scope. Quinlan described the 2026 season as “a journey to Italy and back to America,” inspired in part by stories from his own Italian heritage.

Performances take place in repertory style at the outdoor Ewing Theatre, allowing audiences to experience multiple productions throughout the summer. “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” opens June 27, while “Our Town” begins performances July 10. “Romeo and Juliet” also returns to the festival stage as one of Shakespeare’s most enduring love stories with its opening on June 26.

One of the most beloved parts of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival experience is the atmosphere before the curtain rises at the beautiful Ewing Cultural Center. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the festival’s pre-show activities, which often include live music performances, themed “green shows,” and educational pre-show talks connected to the evening’s production. Patrons frequently spread picnic blankets across the scenic Ewing grounds and gardens, creating a relaxed outdoor gathering that has become a signature tradition of the festival. Local food trucks are sometimes available before performances.  Concessions, including snacks, beverages, beer, and wine, are also available in the Ewing Courtyard, allowing theatergoers to enjoy dinner and entertainment before settling into the open-air theatre for a night of Shakespeare under the stars.

Theatre for Young Audiences

Illinois Shakespeare Festival - Theatre for Young Audiences

In addition to its evening performances, the festival offers free Theatre for Young Audiences productions. This summer’s featured children’s show, “Get, Set, Romeo and Juliet!,” is a fast-paced 40-minute adaptation designed for younger audiences and families.

Performances of this year’s TYA show run Thursdays and Saturdays at 10 am June 25 through August 1 (no performance will take place on July 4) on the Ewing Cultural Center grounds.

Beyond the stage, the Illinois Shakespeare Festival has developed into a major educational and cultural institution. The organization hosts youth summer camps, touring productions for schools, internships for college students, and community engagement programs throughout the year. Its “Bard in a Box” outreach initiative brings Shakespearean performances and workshops directly into schools and community centers across the region.

Festival traditions also include special events such as Bard Basics discussions, Pride Night, Teen Night, and fundraising activities including the John Stevens Memorial Golf Outing. These events help deepen audience engagement while supporting the continued growth of the organization.

Since its founding, the Illinois Shakespeare Festival has staged nearly every Shakespeare play and has featured performers who later achieved national recognition in film and television, including Gary Cole, William Petersen, and Tim Russ.

Today, the festival continues to blend professional artistry with community accessibility, preserving the legacy of Shakespeare while introducing new generations to live theater under the summer skies of Central Illinois.
